>
> Dealers have completed more than 3 million remedies on vehicles
> involved in
> recent recalls, Steve St. Angelo, Toyota’s North American chief qual

> officer, said in several media interviews published today. These
> fixes
> have included:
>
> 1.6 million to address the potential for sticking accelerator
> pedals;
> 1.5 million to address the potential for floor mat pedal
> entrapment;
> and
> 115,000 program updates to the anti-lock brake systems (ABS) in
> certain 2010 Prius and Lexus models.
>
> St. Angelo also noted that the company has now delivered 150 event
> data
> recorder (EDR) readout devices to North America and U.S. territories,
> following up on an earlier commitment the company made to Congress.
> Of
> those devices, 10 were provided to NHTSA for use by its
> investigators, St.
> Angelo told Bloomberg.
>
> St. Angelo also commented on the stronger voice that Toyota’s leader
> ship
> team in North American now has on key decisions. “I have a direct l
> ine to
> [Toyota’s global president] Akio Toyoda for any quality issue.
> It’s very
> different,” he told the Detroit News. He also discussed the importa

> 2. Senate Introduces Auto Safety Reform
>
> A group of senators yesterday officially introduced legislation to
> overhaul
> U.S. auto safety laws. The bill – the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2
> 010 –
> is largely identical to a draft circulated last week by Sen. Jay
> Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee,
> according
> to the Detroit News. In addition to increasing potential financial
> penalties for automakers in certain circumstances, the bill would
> institute
> standards for brake override and event data recorder (EDR)
> technology in
> new vehicles, improve systems for reporting potential safety issues
> and
> authorize increased funding for NHTSA.
>
> In an interview with the Detroit News, Rockefeller discussed the
> legislation and commented on his view of Toyota’s response to the re
> calls.
> Toyota has “accepted responsibility for what happened and they are m
> oving
> to correct it,” Rockefeller said. “Toyota is a very, very strong
> company,
> and they don't like what's happened, and they want to fix it."
>
> Separately, the House of Representatives is considering a version of
> auto
> safety reform legislation that has some differences. This House
> legislation was first proposed last week by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-
> Calif.)
> and Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), two Congressional chairmen who oversee
> auto
> safety regulation. The Waxman-Rush bill is expected to be
> considered in a
> hearing on Thursday this week before Rush’s Subcommittee on Commerc
> e,
> Trade, and Consumer Protection.
