> 1. Toyota Reports Strong April Sales – Again #1 in Retail Sales
>
> Toyota announced Monday that it was No. 1 in sales to individual
> consumers
> in April for the second straight month, making it the top-selling
> retail
> brand in the industry so far this year. Total sales were up more
> than 24
> percent, on a volume basis, from the same month one year ago.
>
> In a call with journalists, Toyota Division General Manager Bob Carter
> noted that Toyota Motor Sales’ market share overall in April was 16
> percent, with TMS’ share of the retail market approaching a record
> 18
> percent. Retail numbers reflect sales to consumers only, not those to
> corporate fleets and rental car companies that are included in total
> sales
> numbers each month for automakers. Carter also noted that both
> Toyota and
> Lexus are ramping up production of certain models to meet growing
> demand.
> He added that April also was the best month ever in sales for
> certified
> used vehicles.
>
> Toyota dealers also continued to attract buyers from other brands,
> with
> about 40 percent of Toyota-brand buyers coming from another
> manufacturer
> again last month.
>
> The company looks forward to continuing this momentum with a
> National Sales
> Event in May, which will extend for another month zero percent
> financing on
> select Toyota brand models, excellent lease rates and two years/25,000
> miles free maintenance plan for all customers who buy or lease a new
> vehicle.
>
> Although incentives have certainly played a role in Toyota’s
> industry-leading sales, Carter noted that third-party sources have
> estimated that Toyota’s incentives average only about two-thirds tho
> se of
> most automakers. Asked about the future of such incentives, Carter
> said,
> “We see no short-term change in our incentive strategy, but long-ter
> m we
> plan to market the product, not the deal.”
